WHAT’ S NEW IN 2027
GLP-1 MEDICATION COVERAGE
Starting January 1, 2027, MWAA medical plan options will no longer cover GLP-1 medications when prescribed only for weight management. GLP-1s prescribed to treat other covered diagnoses, such as Type 2 diabetes or cardiovascular needs, are not affected.
GLP-1s are effective for weight loss but require ongoing use to maintain results and can be expensive. If discontinued, weight typically returns. As a result, our benefits will focus on behavioral, nutritional, and clinical approaches to weight loss that can produce sustainable results.
For anyone who wants to use GLP-1s outside of our medical plans, below are some companies that offer weight loss programs with GLP-1 medication as part of their program. This is not a comprehensive list, and the Airport Authority is not recommending or advocating for any singular or particular company, or any medical care decisions, this is informational only. PREMIUM CHANGES
As medical costs continue to rise, so do the premiums for coverage. Overall, the Airports Authority will continue to pay 80 % of the cost for medical coverage; employee premiums represent 20 % of the cost. For 2027, that cost-sharing means higher premiums for both United Healthcare plans. Premiums for the Kaiser plan will decrease for 2027.
GLP-1 Coverage: FAQs
Why is this change happening?
This decision was made after a careful review of the long-term sustainability of our healthcare plans and the significant increase in prescription drug costs associated with GLP-1 medications used for weight loss. Demand for these medications has grown rapidly nationwide, leading to substantial increases in healthcare spending for employers and health plans. To ensure that MWAA can continue to provide comprehensive, affordable healthcare benefits for all employees and their families, we must responsibly manage rising medical and pharmacy costs while maintaining coverage for medically necessary treatments. This decision allows us to balance access to essential healthcare services with our commitment to maintaining sustainable benefit programs for the future.
When does this take effect?
